Postcard from Giacomo Puccini

World Digital Library,

The document presented here is a postcard sent by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) to his brother-in-law Giuseppe Razzi, Via Porta Santa Maria 14, Florence, announcing the impending arrival of the composer in Florence. The date of the postcard (September 7, 1904) and the place from which it was mailed (Montecatini) can be ascertained from the postmark in ink on the back of the card. The front of the card shows a promotional view of the hotel and restaurant L’Appennino in Montecatini, where Puccini presumably was staying. The postcard is from the Fondo Bonturi-Razzi in the State Library of Lucca, which consists of more than 500 letters, postcards, photographs and other items relating to the life and work of Puccini. The collection was acquired by the State Library of Lucca in 2006 from the heirs of Giuseppe Razzi and his wife Adelaide (Ida) Bonturi, the sister of Puccini’s wife Elvira Bonturi Puccini (1860–1930). Puccini was born in Lucca into a family of musicians that for two centuries had provided the musical directors of the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca. He served for a time as organist for the cathedral before studying composition in Milan. In 1891 he moved to the small town Torre del Lago near the Tyrrhenian Sea. There he wrote his most famous operas, including La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), and Madama Butterfly (1904). Later bursts of creativity resulted in the three operas of Il Trittico (Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi), which premiered in 1918, and Turandot, which premiered in 1926, after the composer’s death.
