DESCRIZIONE

Lidded box, of rounded form and with rounded corners, decorated with cherry trees in blossom which continue over to the base in gold and silver takamaki-e (maki-e in which parts of the design are raised by adding clay or charcoal powder on a patterned, woven bamboo ground which is lacquered red, with borders of floral scrolls all round the sides of the box on top and bottom in gold hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it has hardened so that it is in low relief) on a ground of nashiji (irregularly-shaped flakes of gold suspended in clear or yellowish lacquer resembling pear skin); in the centre of the bottom is a piece of gold and brown brocade decorated with a scroll of birds and flowers. The inside of the lid of the box is decorated with bamboos by a stream in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e lacquer with kirikane (metal foil cut to various shapes and individually set into lacquer) on a nashiji lacquer ground. Silver fittings in the shape of battledores are fixed to either side of the lid, to which are attached very faded red silk cords with tassels.
MEDIUM: Lacquered patterned, woven bamboo base with gold and silver takamaki-e (maki-e in which parts of the design are raised by adding clay or charcoal powder), gold hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it has hardened so that it is in low relief), nashiji (irregularly-shaped flakes of gold suspended in clear or yellowish lacquer resembling pear skin), kirikane (metal foil cut to various shapes and individually set into lacquer) with silver fittings, gold brocade, red silk cords and tassels.
