Rubbing from stele of a votive drawing depicting a seated Guanyin Bodhisattva (a Buddhist deity called Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, known to the Chinese as Guanyin Bodhisattva-- the Bodhisattva of Compassion or Goddess of Great Mercy). Inscriptions and painting by Wang Ziying (Qing dynasty, active in Kangxi reign1722). / Images: on the right, a Guanyin holding willow sitting on lotus mat in a landscape of rocks and bamboo grove (purple bamboos); a child figure standing on a rock in the lower left facing up toward the Guanyin figure. / Inscriptions include: a poem, a postcript. / Poem: praising Guanyin for his/her benevolent and invincible power. / Postscript: the artist Wang Ziying, as a devout Buddhist and a pious adherent of Guanyin Bodhisattva, painted 5,048 (1 ""zang"" canon) portraits of Guanyin making a vow in hope of having a child when his family was still childless while aged over 40 (it is believed that Guanyin answers the prayers and petitions of childless people seeking sons or daughters). While Wang's prayers were granted with 10 sons and 3 daughters, he continued to paint 1,300 more portraits. Engraved this painting on stele for preservation when his age approached 70 while traveling to Qin area (current Shaanxi area). / 2 seals of Wang Ziyin following the inscriptions. / 4 engraved names (in the lower left corner of the rubbing) probably done by later vistiors after viewing the stele.

(full rubbing and all sections) / Li dai guan yin bao xiang, 1998, pl. 136 (Qing Wang Ziyin hua).General note: Script style: kai shu. / Guan yin-- Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, known as Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit is the spiritual son/daughter of Amitabha Buddha and serves as his ""right-hand man."" The deity is known in Chinese as Guanyin (a short version of ""Guanshiyin"") Bodhisattva -- ""Guanyin"" -- "" the One Who Observes and Attends to the Sounds of the World"", which means Guanyin looks down mercifully upon the suffering people, would always observe all the sounds from the world and always listen to requests from her worshippers. Thus, Guanyin also called ""Goddess of Great Mercy"" and ""The Bodhisattva of Compassion."" Known in Japan as Kannon. / Putuo Mountain-- According to the Garland Sutra, ""The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara lives in the Putuo Mountain."" Because the Putuo Mountain in India looked similar to China's Mount Putuo, Mount Putuo of Zhejiang Province eventually became the domain of Avalokitesvara. Putuoshan (Putuo Mountain) is located on one of the Zhoushan Islands in eastern Zhejiang Province. / F-10 (95.5 x 45.5 cm) is a duplicate.
