Interpret changes: some notes about a theory of reading

Biblioteche Oggi,

During the 20th Century, there have been many studies about reading from different perspectives. This paper will first examine the unique contribution made by two correlated areas of study: sociology and mass communication research. It will specifically consider theories and works developed within the so-called Toronto School, a diverse group of scholars who, in the second half of the 20th Century, started to explore connections between the evolving technologies of the speech and cognitive, cultural and social changes. The basis for their work was essentially provided by an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Media and, most of all, by a pronounced tendency to view technology, especially communication technology, as an independent variable to study social changes. An attempt to establish a theoretical framework concerning reading in all its forms will furthermore made by adopting a perspective based on neuroscience and education studies.Contributions made by Maryanne Wolf on the one hand and Gunther Kress on the other one will be of paramount importance to study reading, as well as its forms and mechanisms.
